The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Syria, in a new report on Monday, called for a political solution to what has become an increasingly militarized conflict.
"There is an urgent need for a sustained diplomatic initiative to put an end to the violence and the suffering of the Syrian population," head of the commission Paulo Pinheiro told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
In a statement read by Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN's European Office in Geneva Seyed Mohammad Reza Sajjadi on Monday, Iran said that it shares a common view with the need to find a political solution to the crisis.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran agrees with the commission of inquiry that military option is not the sole solution to the crisis in Syria," the statement reiterated.
Iran also underscored the necessity for a full cessation of hostilities and violence which has resulted in a blatant violation of human rights and crime against humanity.
The statement also urged continued efforts to hold comprehensive and meaningful talks among all Syrian groups which are pursuing legitimate objectives of the Syrian society.
Earlier this month, Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham said President Bashar al-Assad's government is ready to start talks with opposition groups without any precondition.
"… God willing we will win through (maintaining) unity and integrity and we have no precondition for sitting at the negotiating table for talks," al-Laham told FNA in Damascus.
He noted that the Syrian people are relying on their national possibilities to get rid of the current crisis, and stressed, "The door of negotiation and dialogue is open to everyone, and everyone can sit at the negotiating table to first put an end to the Syrian citizens' pains and sufferings and then provide a safe exit from the crisis for the Syrian people."
