A ‘rough ride’ is the notorious police practice of deliberately driving their vans in such a way that unbuckled, handcuffed prisoners inside are slammed around and damaged. In Baltimore ‘rough rides’ have previously resulted in victims of the police being left paraplegic and paralyzed, with the recent victim being Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old who sustained fatal trauma to his neck and spine at some point while in police custody following his arrest on April 12.
