Principlist Candidates Will Converge Soon

Supreme Leader's top aide in international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati, who is also a presidential hopeful, said the principlist candidates who registered their name as candidates for the upcoming presidential election will soon show more convergence to boost their chance of winning the race.

Velayati is a member of the Coalition 2 plus one. The other members are Tehran's Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and a senior advisor to Ayatollah Khamenei and MP Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel. All the three belong to the principlist camp

Registration of candidates started on May 7 and ended at 6pm this afternoon. Tens of principlists have registered their name for the race.

Asked about the ripe time for principlists to narrow down their differences and introduce one single candidate for the presidential race, Velayati, who was speaking to reporters after registering his name as a candidate for the June election, said, "We are loyal to our covenant even if we eventually choose a person other than the three of us. All the three of us believe it and there is no difference and divisions among us (me, Qalibaf and Haddad)."

Velayati said upcoming polls will show who will be the proper candidate to represent the principlists in the election.

The 11th presidential election will take place on June 14, 2013.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for qualifications.
