The Seismological center of Bushehr province affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University registered a magnitude 6.2 quake in Hormozgan with several aftershocks jolting various parts of the province, specially the port cities of Jask and Minab.

"The quake today has injured 15," Hormozgan Governor-General Ebrahim Azizi said, adding that one of them is in critical conditions.

The main quake today jolted Minab at 06:38 hours local time (0208 GMT Friday) at a depth of 15 kilometers.

The epicenter of the quake was located in an area 57.76 degrees in longitude and 26.52 degrees in latitude.

The Seismological center of Bushehr also said that the aftershocks measured 4.8, 4.7, 4.1, 4.9, 5, 5.6, 4.7, 5.2, 3.8, 3.8, 3.9, 4.4, 4, 4.2 on the Richter scale, adding that the last one occurred at 10:29 hours local time (0559 GMT).

A 6.3 earthquake killed 39 people and injured 850 in neighboring Bushehr province last month. Iran's only nuclear power reactor at Bushehr remained unscathed in the quake.

Then, less than a week later a magnitude 7.6 quake jolted the town of Saravan in Iran's Southeastern Sistan and Balouchestan province. The powerful earthquake did not kill anyone as its epicenter was located in a desert area around 81km North of Saravan and in the depth of 95km.

Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.

The worst in recent times hit Bam in southeastern Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel.

The deadliest quake in the country was in June 1990 and measured 7.7 on the Richter scale. About 37,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 injured in the northwestern provinces of Gilan and Zanjan. It devastated 27 towns and about 1,870 villages.
