Iran Reinforces Border Security to Fight Trafficking

On Monday, Iran's police teamed up with the country's Border Guard Command to counter narcotics, human, and gasoline trafficking through Iran-Afghanistan border, known as the Zabul border in southeastern Iran, press tv reported.

"We have 190 surveillance posts, which are equipped with high density optic lenses, electronic motion sensors… night vision camera, and various high frequency radar systems," Major General Mahmoud Amiri said.

"The main goal is to prevent narcotics from entering Iran. Since the main destination of these drugs is Europe, Asia, and other Middle-Eastern countries, we are actually preventing the spread of drugs to the world," Amiri noted.

Iran has a 900-kilometer border with Afghanistan and has frequently been used as the main conduit for the trafficking of Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

The Islamic Republic has spent more than $700 mln to seal the borders and prevent the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab, and Central Asian countries.

The war on drug trade originating from Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past 33 years.
