Official Calls on Arab League to Pay More Attention to Palestinian Issue

A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official blasted the recent Israeli raid on Palestinian worshippers in the al-Aqsa Mosque, and called on the Arab League to pay further attention to issue of Palestine rather than suspending Syria's membership in the bloc.

Official Calls on Arab League to Pay More Attention to Palestinian Issue

"If the Arab League had taken one hundredth of the measures it had taken against the resistant people of Syria to move against the Zionist regime's aggressions, attacks and settlement construction activities, a different condition would reign the Arab world today," Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian told FNA on Saturday.

Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian worshippers near the al-Aqsa Mosque in East al-Quds on Friday, casualties reported.

Witnesses say Israeli forces fired stun grenades near the mosque on Friday to disperse Palestinian worshippers who were protesting against the recent desecration of the Muslims holy book, the Qur'an, by an Israeli soldier. Palestinians retaliated by hurling rocks and firebombs.

Amir Abdollahian also criticized the Arab League for suspending Syria's membership, and said that Syria needs a solely political solution.

During their meeting in Cairo on Wednesday, Arab League foreign ministers discussed whether to give Syria's seat at the bloc to the opposition Syrian National Coalition provided that it first forms a representative executive council.

Arab League suspended Syria's membership at the Cairo-based bloc in November 2011.
