Researchers find way to replace toxic antibacterial agents

Iranian researchers produced nanoparticles with antibacterial properties, which have desirable performance in the presence of various types of bacteria, INIC reports.

Researchers find way to replace toxic antibacterial agents

According to Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC), these types of materials can be used in textile, plastic, paint and coating industries, and also in the production of medical equipment as antibacterial agents. The nanoparticles were produced through a simple, cost-effective and biocompatible method.

The research was carried out aiming at production and investigation on the antibacterial properties of nanostructured polymers. The product has important effects, including reduction in pollution and side effects of usual antibacterial compounds (chemical compounds and metal nanoparticles such as silver).

Antibacterial effects of metal nanoparticles were of high importance in the past. However, the release of these nanoparticles in the environment results in pollution too. Polymers with natural antibacterial properties overcome this problem. These polymers conserve their antibacterial effect for a longer time, and they are not emitted into the environment. Even if they are released into the environment, they are not very harmful due to their polymeric structure. Therefore, the product presented in this research can be used to solve the problem with usual antibacterial agents.
