Police officers came out to the Sarinah in central Jakarta and shot at the attackers, Indonesian news agency 'Antara' reported.
One eyewitness said that the first explosion was at 10:30 AM local time and the other six happened about 30 minutes later.
After the first explosion, the police forces and the terrorists got involved in a conflict; then the attackers detonated six other explosives.
Ways to the scene have been closed and the buildings near the explosions have been evacuated.
Indonesia's Police Chief Badrodin Haiti had warned earlier of attacks on the shopping centers and police stations which he said have been planned by the extremists.
