Angry protesters stormed Saudi embassy in Tehran as well as Saudi consulate general in Mashad last night following the execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by Saudi authorities.
Zolfaqari said that a number of police guards, including three police commanders were wounded when the protests turned violent.
President Hassan Rouhani rebuked the violent protestors and said that the Iranian government respects diplomatic immunity of the Saudi diplomats.
He said that the government will firmly deal with any kind of attack on foreign embassies.
Zolfaqari said that police have arrested some 40 people for storming Saudi diplomatic compound.
He said that the Supreme National Security Council is investigating the attack on the Saudi Embassy.
