Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remark on Monday.
“We welcome any positive step [taken] by various players toward helping the resolution of the conflict in line with respect for [Syria’s] sovereignty and people’s votes, and toward entrusting the Syrians themselves with [the country’s] political fate,” he said.
The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria has thus far claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people and left over one million injured, according to the UN.
The UN appointed several special envoys to work to bring about a solution to the conflict. Italian-Swedish diplomat Staffan de Mistura currently holds the post.
