A spokesman for Russia's Atomstroyexport, a Rosatom subsidiary that completed the construction of the Bushehr power plant, confirmed that the earthquake has left no impact on the plant and the facility is continuing its operation normally.

"Tremors were felt at the plant, but the earthquake did not affect the standard situation at the energy block. All personnel continue to work in the normal regime, the levels of radiation are within the norms," he said.

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted the town of Kaki in Bushehr province, Southern Iran, on Tuesday, killing at least 39 people and injuring more than 750 others.

The Seismological center of Bushehr province affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University registered the quake at 16:22 hours local time (1152 GMT).

The epicenter of the quake was located in an area 51.5 degrees in longitude and 28.4 degrees in latitude.

In February, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereidoun Abbasi once again underlined the high safety standards of Iran's first nuclear power plant in the Southern port city of Bushehr, and said the power plant's safety standards comply with the latest international safety codes and rules.

"Given the Bushehr nuclear power plant's nuclear safety, it is expected that its temporary handover to the Iranian side will take place in the near future after becoming assured of the plant's performance," Abbasi said at the time.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Department of the IAEA in a recent visit to Iran approved the standard safety levels of all Iranian nuclear sites and installations, and lauded the country's measures and special efforts in this regard.

"We realized that Iran's safety system responsible for inspecting Iranian nuclear facilities and installations acts very well and is strong," Head of the IAEA's Nuclear Safety and Security Department Olena Mykolaichuk said in March 2012.

"I, as the head of the (inspection) team, assure the Iranian society that Iran's installations are safe…," Mykolaichuk added.

She also stressed that her team has visited the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran and inspected the safety and security control system at the installations.
