Rouhani was earlier in the day received by Italian President Sergio Mattarella upon his arrival to Rome and after walking through the guard of honor started formal negotiations with Renzi.
Later, they will take part in the signing ceremony of bilateral cooperation agreements and also attend a joint press conference to be followed by an official banquet to the honor of Iranian president.
President Rouhani is scheduled to visit Vatican before he departs for Paris.
